Crosby, Karlsson could sign extensions 'later in summer'
The Penguins have a couple of big -- but not quite pressing -- moves to make this summer.
When players are entering the final year of a multi-year contract, they become eligible to sign extensions on July 1. Notably, on this roster, that applies to both Sidney Crosby and Erik Karlsson, who will soon become eligible to sign extensions that kick in for the 2027-28 season.
The Penguins have more urgent decisions to make when it comes to moves that will shape next season's roster, of course. But I asked Kyle Dubas at his season-ending media availability on Tuesday if extensions for either player could be on the table this summer.
"It's not been a front-burner topic for us," Dubas said. "Both of them, maybe later in the summer as we get back in the fall. Sid is in a different category. Most players, when they get into their late 30s, it tends to become a year-to-year thing. I don't know if that's how each of them will want to handle it, that's just how most players do handle it. We'll discuss that as we get through the summer and into the fall, for sure. In Karl's case, players voted him team MVP, they're very happy with him. And Sid is Sid."
