A depleted Wilkes-Barre/Scranton lineup suffered a 5-1 loss to the Marlies in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference final to fall behind in the series, 3-2.
Mikhail Ilyin scored the game's first goal on a power play in the second period, set up by Emil Pieniniemi and Bill Zonnon. The Marlies struck twice in the remainder in the middle frame, including on a power play, to gain the lead. The Marlies added three more in the third, including an empty-netter.
The Penguins are missing four of their defensemen due to injury -- Alex Alexeyev, Finn Harding, Sebastian Aho and Phil Kemp -- leading to some shuffling this game. Owen Pickering was elevated to the top pairing to play alongside Harrison Brunicke for the first time these playoffs as a result. Brunicke was on the ice for four of the goals against (including the empty-net goal), and Pickering was on the ice for two of the goals against.
Sergei Murashov stopped 28 of 32.
Games 6 and 7 are both in Wilkes-Barre, and the Penguins must take both to move on to the Final. Game 6 is on Sunday, and Game 7 would be on Tuesday.
