Kulak traded to Colorado for Girard, second-rounder
The Penguins have traded Brett Kulak to the Avalanche for left-handed defenseman Samuel Girard and a 2028 second-round pick.
Kulak, 32, had one goal and six assists in 25 games after being acquired from Edmonton in the Tristan Jarry trade. Girard, 27, had three goals and nine assists in 40 games with Colorado this season.
Kulak was set to be a free agent this season. Girard has one year remaining on his contract that carries a $5 million cap hit.
Quick take: The Avalanche needed to move out Girard’s contract, the Penguins had the cap space to take it on. Girard for Kulak is a lateral move this season at worst, but Girard is a lot younger.
