The Penguins will be facing the Flyers in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Penguins won the regular-season series between the two teams, going 2-0-2 with those two losses coming in shootouts. What happened in those four games? Here's a refresher.
Justin Brazeau scored early and Sidney Crosby forced overtime in the third period. A brawl erupted at the end of the third period that resulted in misconducts for each of Crosby, Noel Acciari, Ryan Shea and Parker Wotherspoon for the Penguins, and Jamie Drysdale, Tyson Foerster, Owen Tippett and Trevor Zegras for the Flyers. Evgeni Malkin scored the lone goal in the ensuing skills competition, while Bryan Rust and Ville Koivunen were stopped
Arturs Silovs showed well before the shootout, stopping 32 of 34, conceding a power-play goal to Bobby Brink and another goal to Travis Konecny.
Dec. 1, Philadelphia: Penguins 5, Flyers 1
The Penguins got power-play goals from Crosby, Rustand Tommy Novak in this one. Crosby scored another at even-strength, and Kevin Hayes capped off the win with a goal in the third. Tristan Jarry stopped 28 of 29, with Foerster's power-play goal being the Flyers' lone tally.
Jan. 15, Pittsburgh: Penguins 6, Flyers 3
The Penguins got three power-play goals in this one too, this time from Brazeau, Rust and Crosby. Egor Chinakhov, Blake Lizotte and Connor Dewar scored the other goals. Stuart Skinner stopped 31 of 34 shots faced, with Rodrigo Abols scoring in the second period and Nick Seeler and Michkov both scoring in the latter half of the third.
Blake Lizotte fought Matvei Michkov.
March 7, Pittsburgh: Flyers 4, Penguins 3, shootout
A Novak power-play goal opened this one, but Tippett quickly answered. Teams traded goals in the second period -- Rickard Rakell and Erik Karlsson for the Penguins, Alex Bump and Denver Barkey for the Flyers. The Penguins held the Flyers to just 16 shots on goal, but three of them got past Skinner. This one had another fight, with Avery Hayes squaring off againstDrysdale.
Another terrible shootout in this one. Anthony Mantha, Rakell and Chinakhov failed to score, and Zegrasscored for the Flyers. The good news: No shootouts in these next meetings.
