The Penguins on Friday signed undrafted free agent defenseman Jake Livanavage to a two-year entry-level contract out of the University of North Dakota following the conclusion of his junior season.
Livanavage, 21, ranked second among North Dakota defensemen this season in scoring with 25 points (five goals, 20 assists) in 39 games. He's listed at 5 foot 11 and 190 pounds and is a left-handed shot.
The most interesting part of this: That contract starts this year, and he's reporting to the NHL club. Either the Penguins see him as someone who can add a boost this year, or Livanavage was so coveted in the free agent market that promising that to him was essential to getting the deal done.
