Evgeni Malkin will be 39 years old next month, and entering the final year of his contract. Naturally, speculation has been rampant regarding his future, including a recent "report" that this year will be Malkin's last with the Penguins, as they won't offer him a contract after this season.
I asked Kyle Dubas on Monday at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex if there has been any decision made on Malkin's future beyond this season, and he chuckled before offering an emphatic "No" and shaking his head.
"I talked to Geno at the end of the year after the year," Dubas told me. "I get it. It's the last year of his contract, and it's been a topic of discussion."
Dubas said that he expressed the sentiment that a decision on Malkin's future has yet to be made in that exit meeting, and then again reached out to his agent J.P. Barry to reiterate that when the notion that they won't offer him another contract "started to gain some steam."
"We'll meet at the Olympic break this year and see where Geno's at, and meet at the end of the year," Dubas explained. "It's strange, he's going to be 39 at the end of July. He's still playing at a very high level for a player of that age. He means a great deal to the community. Our focus is on treating him right, pushing him to continue to be at his best this year, and do right by him by continuing to communicate with him where he stands."
