The Penguins signed forward prospect Melvin Fernstrom to a three-year entry-level contract on Friday.
The Penguins' release on the signing didn't outright say that the contract begins next season, which suggests that Fernstrom may not come to North America just yet. The 19-year-old Swede is still eligible to have his contract "slide" for a year, so he could return to Sweden next season and then have his contract begin the following year.
Fernstrom had 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) in 48 games with his club Orebro, with 11 of the points coming in the final 19 games. He was voted the Swedish Hockey League's Rookie of the Year for his efforts.
Fernstrom, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound winger, was originally a 2024 third-round pick of the Canucks. He was acquired by the Penguins in the Marcus Pettersson/Drew O'Connor trade midseason.
