Kyle Dubas said on Friday that the Penguins still needed to make one hire to round out their coaching staff, an assistant coach to manage the defense and penalty kill.
On Monday, the Penguins found that guy in Mike Stothers.
Stothers, 63, was most recently a senior advisor for the Ducks in 2023-24 after spending two years behind the Ducks' bench as an assistant coach. He was formerly the head coach of the Kings' AHL affiliate (2014-20), head coach of the WHL's Moose Jaw Warriors (2011-14), assistant coach of the Thrashers (2010-11), head coach of the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins (2007-08), head coach of the OHL's Owen Sound Attack (2002-07), assistant coach of the Flyers (2000-02), assistant coach of the AHL's Philadelphia Phantoms (1996-00), and assistant coach of the AHL's Hershey Bears (1991-96).
Stothers was an assistant coach of Canada's 2021 gold medal-winning U18 World Championship team. He was head coach of the Ontario Reign for the 2015 Calder Cup win, also winning the AHL's award for coach of the year. He also won a Calder Cup as an assistant with the Phantoms in 1998.
Stothers played professionally as a forward from 1982-92, appearing in 671 AHL games and 30 NHL games with the Maple Leafs and Flyers. He won the Calder Cup as a player with the 1984 Maine Mariners.
“As a champion at both the AHL and international levels, Mike has a tremendous track record of helping develop players and take their game to the next level, as seen throughout the multiple leagues he has coached in over the last 30 years,” head coach Dan Muse said of the hire. “We’re thrilled to welcome Mike to the city of Pittsburgh as he rounds out our coaching staff for the 2025-26 season.”
Muse's staff also includes Todd Nelson to manage the forwards, Rich Clune, whose focus will be on development and will be the "eye in the sky" from the press box, and Nick Bonino, who will at first focus on faceoffs and learning how to coach.
