The Penguins traded Vladislav Kolyachonok to the Stars for right-handed defenseman Mathew Dumba and a 2028 second-round pick.
Kolyachonok, 24, was a waiver claim from Utah last season. After recording two goals, three assists and a minus-7 rating in 23 games with Utah, he recorded two assists and a minus-5 rating in 12 games with the Penguins. He saw time on the top pairing alongside Kris Letang, and while his skating always stood out as a strength, his overall play suffered even relative to the rest of the Penguins' underwhelming blue line, and he saw his role decreased until he was out of the lineup. He had one year remaining on his contract at the league-minimum $775,000.
Dumba, who turns 31 later this month, is entering the final year of his contract that carries a $3.75 million cap hit, a contract that had the Stars projected to be just over the salary cap prior to the trade. Last season was his first year in Dallas, and Dumba had one goal, nine assists and a minus-5 rating in 63 games.
Immediate take: This is a cap dump by the Stars in exchange for a player who wasn't in the Penguins' plans. Dumba has one year remaining on his deal, and the Penguins likely won't be that competitive next season, and so taking on a 2028 second-round pick is a pretty solid haul. The pick not being until 2028 isn't really a bad thing, given the number of picks (especially high picks) the Penguin have accumulated this year and in the next couple of years. Ideally the influx of prospects will be spread out so there's a steady stream of talent coming in, and so to avoid issues with too many prospects ready for contracts at once.
The Penguins have now accumulated 29 draft picks over the next three years -- 17 of which are within the first three rounds.
