Monday's 5 p.m. deadline to qualify restricted free agents passed, and the Penguins only extended a qualifying offer to Vasily Ponomarev. Ponomarev recently signed a three-year deal in the KHL, but the move retains his North American signing rights in the event he eventually returns.
The Penguins did not extend qualifying offers to Connor Dewar and Phil Tomasino, despite Kyle Dubas saying earlier in the day that they were "having conversations with" both players. A team representative said Monday after qualifying offers were submitted that Dubas still had interest in bringing back both players despite not extending qualifying offers. One thing to note is that by not qualifying either, the Penguins avoid a potential arbitration case. However, if they remain unsigned by noon tomorrow, they will still become unrestricted free agents.
Raivis Ansons, Emil Bemstrom, Taylor Gauthier and P.O Joseph did not receive qualifying offers and will become unrestricted free agents. Ansons, however, has already signed an AHL deal with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for next season.
