Three observations: Callihan shows off swing in debut
Three observations from the Pirates' 5-3 win over the Tigers here today at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium:
• Tyler Callihan's Pirates debut didn't result in any hits, but I could see why he's a prospect with some offensive upside. He's got a smooth swing, good bat speed and possesses the ability to hit to all fields, going the other way to left with two flyouts here in his first two at-bats. I think time will tell what his role ends up being here. I'm intrigued to see more from him, though.
• HunterBarco sprayed the ball around a little in the third inning and found himself in some trouble when he walked a batter and allowed three hits, including an RBI double to AustinSlater. I don't think he executed badly, though. Slater and ColtKeith got hits on balls out of the zone and Barco flirted with the edges on his walk to ZachMcKinstry. Barco, who ended up throwing 36 of 57 pitches for strikes, struck out three and got four ups for the first time this spring.
• Don't let the first three hits of his spring fool you, KonnorGriffin isn't going to rely on solely hitting homers. His line-drive single in the first inning served as an example of his pure hitting ability spurred by consistent hard contact. Whether he's putting the ball in play and committing an out or lining a ball into the outfield, Griffin's blistering the ball and putting pressure on defenders. That's just as good of a sight to see as him leaving the yard.
