The Pirates have added left-handed relief depth to their roster by signing GenesisCabrera to a one-year major-league deal.
Michael Darrell-Hicks has been optioned to Class AAA Indianapolis to make room on the active roster, while HunterStratton has been designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. Cabrera will be active tomorrow when the Pirates begin a three-game weekend series with the Mets at PNC Park.
Cabrera posted a 6.35 ERA, allowing 12 earned runs in 17 innings, and collected 15 strikeouts in 15 appearances between the Mets and Cubs this season. He was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Saturday and outrighted to Class AAA Iowa on Monday. Cabrera, who elected free agency on Tuesday, now gives the Pirates a second lefty in the bullpen along with CalebFerguson.
Cabrera has a 17-14 career record with five saves, a 4.03 ERA and 283 strikeouts in 287 appearances (two starts) in the big leagues with St. Louis (2019-23), Toronto (2023-24), the Mets (2025) and Cubs (2025).
