Luis Ortiz is under investigation by Major League Baseball and has been placed on paid leave through July 17. MLB has not released specifics of the investigation, but multiple reports state that it is related to gambling, specifically two pitches flagged by a betting-integrity firm.
On June 15 against the Mariners, Ortiz threw a first-pitch ball in the second inning that missed drastically. He threw another to start the third inning against the Cardinals on June 27. Both pitches flagged bets in Ohio, New York and New Jersey, according to an ESPN report.
Ortiz was scheduled to start today against the Cubs.
The Pirates traded Ortiz and two pitching prospects to the Guardians this offseason for Spencer Horwitz. In 16 starts and 88 2/3 innings, Ortiz has produced a 4.36 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and a 4-9 record. He's also walked 42 and struck out 96.
