Bubba Chandler was quite direct in describing his performance in the Pirates’ 5-0 loss to the Padres here tonight at PNC Park.
“It’s piss poor,” said Chandler, who allowed three runs on five hits and four walks over 4 1/3 innings in his second start of the season. “Hits are fine, it's stuff that's gonna happen, but not competing in the zone is just pathetic. It's eating at me, and I'm gonna fix it, clean it up. I've got five more days before I throw again. It won't happen again.”
Chandler wasn’t at all at his best. He threw just 48 of 83 pitches for strikes and found himself in some tough situations. But it’s also not like he left his team facing an insurmountable deficit. They were well within reach upon his departure and the bats couldn’t do enough to rally back.
Still, it’s not a bad sign that a young pitcher of Chandler’s caliber isn’t satisfied with an outing like this. He’s now walked 10 batters and has a 1.73 WHIP in 8 2/3 innings. He expects more from himself, especially considering he has previously shown better command at the major-league level, walking just four batters in 31 1/3 innings late last year.
“Hate that we lost, but again, I'm just setting our team up for failure right now, with the guys having to come in out of the 'pen a lot sooner than they should,” Chandler said. “That stuff's gotta get cleaned up.”
