Knowing that there's a spot up for grabs within the Pirates' starting rotation, Hunter Barco is approaching every outing with a competitive mindset.

He's vying for a major-league opportunity that guys like Carmen Mlodzinski, José Urquidy, Thomas Harrington and Mike Clevinger seem to be in the mix for this spring, and Barco feels better equipped to compete after adding to his arsenal this winter.

"That’s definitely the goal, to go out and win a job," said Barco, who threw three scoreless innings in the Pirates' 6-1 win over the Cardinals here today at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. "The biggest thing this spring is, I basically doubled my arsenal since last season, so just getting reps with all the new pitches. Joey (Bart) did a great job back there today, calling everything in the right spots and trying to figure out what goes where. The main focus is going to win a job.”

A pitcher who has relied heavily on a four-seam fastball, slider and splitter in the past, Barco added a sinker, changeup and sweeper over the offseason. The goal is to use the sinker and sweeper to better attack left-handed hitters. The changeup comes into play as a pitch that can get guys off the fastball.

On this day, Barco tinkered with his new pitches on a few occasions to get a better feel for them, while still leaning heavily on a fastball (28 of 44 pitches) that generated seven whiffs and a slider (8 times) that hitters swung and missed at three times. He didn't allow a hit, walked two and struck out three in his first career spring start.

"Really it’s just finding the right times to throw it, the right hand placement and just trying not to place them," Barco said of the new additions. "Just trusting everything and throwing it.”

Three observations from the Pirates' 6-1 win over the Cardinals here today at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium:

• It's easy for one to be in awe of the power Konnor Griffin displays in batting practice or live BP settings. But when his approach leads to putting good swings on balls in actual game competition, it validates his standing as a legit superstar in the making. Griffin homered again here against the Cardinals, belting an 0-1 Kyle Leahy sweeper over the fence in left-center field in the first inning. A hanging breaking ball and he was just waiting on it for his third homer of the spring. I'd like to see him sprinkle in some other hits, cause some havoc on the bases and continue to have good at-bats once pitchers are more in game shape, but the kid certainly looks the part. I mentioned wanting to see him steal some bags this spring and Griffin said he's "itching to get dirty." The defense has to be sharp, too, but Griffin is certainly making his case for a spot on the opening day roster. He just has to keep producing and learning along the way.

• I've been impressed by the things I've seen from Jhostynxon Garcia this spring. He's played solid defense, showed that his arm plays in the outfield and he's having good at-bats. He's produced three multi-hit games so far and has only struck out twice while walking three times in 16 plate appearances. Today, he walked on five pitches by laying off four up and out of the zone, and then homered in his second at-bat, refusing to chase at two pitches away before hammering an inside slider out to left field. He also added a sixth-inning single on a curveball down in the zone. The results have been good to see. Everything leading to those results, that's even more important.

• If Jared Triolo is indeed going into opening day as the starting third baseman, offensive production at the bottom half of the order is a must. Surely the offseason additions to the lineup will help take pressure off of him having to do too much, but he's shown he's capable of hitting at the major-league level when there's less at stake. He needs to produce -- like he did with his two hits, including a double, here today -- on a more consistent basis and provide more than just an elite glove.

• HOME RUN: Garcia with his first homer of the spring. Clobbered it to left. A 2-0 inside slider after laying off two outside pitches. Pirates 5, Cardinals 0

• Barco gets a third inning and it was probably his best of the day. Fastball and slider both working for him there. Two strikeouts and a weak popout in foul territory. Should be it for him after three scoreless.

• Barco up to 34 pitches over two innings. Started with a four-pitch walk and then gets a fly out and a double play. Command has been shaky, for sure, but he's managed to work his way out of trouble.

• Griffin grounds out in his second at-bat of the day. Sinker on the inside part of the plate. It's those inside pitches that Griffin will have to make better contact on moving forward, especially once pitchers adjust to him more.

• RUNS: Two-run single for Triolo. Two really good swings for him in this one. Pirates 4, Cardinals 0

• Didn't mention it before but that Griffin homer followed a nice swing and a double the other way from Triolo. First pitch fastball on the outer third and he just went with it.

• Barco throws 24 pitches -- half of them for strikes -- in the first. Mainly fastballs, but a few good sliders he generated some swing and miss with.
