Upon the conclusion of a rain delay that neared the two-and-a-half-hour mark, CamSanders was tasked with protecting a four-run lead and continuing what PaulSkenes did in keeping the Rays at bay over four scoreless innings.
That's a challenge that others within the Pirates' bullpen have struggled to meet with much success as of late, and Sanders became the latest reliever to fail in getting the job done. Sanders, who was recalled from Class AAA Indianapolis on Friday, walked a batter before striking out two and coming within one out of escaping with a zero still on the board. Three straight hits followed, including an RBI double by JuniorCaminero and an RBI single by JonathanAranda. Sanders was replaced by EvanSisk, and the hit parade continued with a two-run double by JonnyDeLuca and an RBI single by CedricMullins that put the Rays on top.
"Cam's first outing up in a tough spot to put him in," said Don Kelly. "We needed some length there to get him in and Sisk coming in on the backside, was able to give us three ups and go, I think it was 1 2/3 and maybe 2 innings, just trying to bridge the gap to the guys in the back end."
After the Pirates tied it up in the eighth inning receiving quality work from Isaac Mattson in eighth and Gregory Soto in the ninth inning to stabilize the game for the Pirates, Yohan Ramirez had a chance to escape an 11th inning jam with two outs and a runner at first but his attempted pickoff missed Spencer Horwitz and the ball bounced off the tarp along the first base line to roll towards right field allowing Taylor Walls to score all the way from first base.
Ramirez tossed three innings, allowing three runs to score, one was earned on four hits, two walks, and a strikeout.
"Obviously, he got the loss," Paul Skenes said. "He did more than I think anybody was expecting him to do."
