The Pirates have evidently displayed signs of urgency in the early going of the offseason, as they were reportedly "primed to spend more than twice" the amount they spent on FranciscoLiriano ($39 million) in order to sign JoshNaylor before he re-signed with the Mariners, per Jeff Passan.
Passan also reported that the Pirates are in on KyleSchwarber, who is projected to earn a five-year, $135 million deal ($27M AAV) according to MLB Trade Rumors, and are "strongly considering" giving No. 1 overall prospect KonnorGriffin an opportunity to win the starting shortstop job out of spring training.
The latter seems like an obvious decision, in my opinion. Even if Griffin doesn't make the team out of spring training, it's wise to at least give him the chance to battle for an opening day spot, just as JaredJones did heading into 2024. The other two reports are certainly encouraging in regards to the club's efforts to build around a pitching staff led by PaulSkenes. These efforts need to have results, though.
