Bidois, Dotel among players protected from Rule 5 Draft
In addition to protecting Esmerlyn Valdez from the Rule 5 Draft, the Pirates are adding infielder JackBrannigan, left-handed pitcher TylerSamaniego and right-handed pitchers BrandanBidois, Wilber Dotel and Antwone Kelly to their 40-man roster ahead of the 6 p.m. deadline, per source.
The Pirates entered today with 39 players on their 40-man roster. ColinHolderman, Dauri Moreta, Ronny Simon and Alexander Canario have been designated for assignment and CamDevanney was released to pursue an opportunity to play overseas. Holderman and Moreta were both arbitration-eligible. Per MLB Trade Rumors, Holderman was projected to make $1.7 million in arbitration and Moreta was projected to make $800,000.
Brannigan is the Pirates' No. 21-ranked prospect and Dotel is ranked No. 28 according to MLB Pipeline. Brannigan, 24, hit .225 and drove in 30 runs over 59 games with Class AA Altoona before seeing his season come to an end due to injury in mid-June. Dotel, 23, went 7-9 with a 4.15 ERA and struck out 131 batters in 125 2/3 innings over 27 starts with Altoona.
Samaniego, 26, made 30 appearances this past season, including 20 in which he sported a 3.08 ERA for Altoona. Bidois, 24, went 8-0, compiled a 0.74 ERA and limited opposing hitters to a .110 batting average across 40 appearances this season, including 14 for Altoona and nine for Class AAA Indianapolis. Kelly, 22, had a 3.02 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over 25 starts between high Class A Greensboro and Altoona.
