“I wouldn't say I ever lost confidence," he'd say to me after this game, which I thought was a funny way to answer a question about simply building confidence over this past month that's seen the best pitching of his life. "I think it's just about making adjustments. After the first two outings that I had, I just kept rolling from there.”
Yep. Dominated the minors. Called up in late May. Cracked for nine runs in 8 1/3 innings over two starts. And then, he's got a 2.29 ERA in seven appearances since June 4, including this latest changeup-pounding gem here -- five scoreless innings, three hits, four walks, six strikeouts -- including three caught-lookings of Seattle's cleanup man, Randy Arozarena., while cautiously walking No. 3-hitting slugger Cal Raleigh three times.
"I don't think the walks I was as mad about tonight," Burrows would say, "just because it was to good hitters who could do damage."
Not taking this too far, but if Burrows sticks, that opens up even more possibilities for the Pirates' general manager -- optimally, Ben Cherington's replacement -- to trade pitching for hitting. Burrows wasn't expected by many to make this type of impact in 2025.
Just saying.
