Ben Cherington is speaking on his team-produced weekly show with JoeBlock today on the Pirates Radio Network. I'll include updates here.
• Cherington on the team's recent play, including one-run wins against the Phillies the last two nights: "You gotta do a lot of little things well to win one-run games, and we've done that the past couple days. Some really clutch pitching performances, good at-bats at times where we've needed good at-bats and the defense has held up. A lot of things coming together."
• Cherington said he's seen improvement in the quality of at-bats over the past two or three weeks. The pitching has been good, too, in his eyes. He said he was particularly proud of the way the bullpen was managed, the choices that were made and the jobs that pitchers did in key moments Friday night.
• Cherington said he believes the Pirates have the will to have success: "The Pirates are going to win. We're going to win more games. I'm confident in that. The question is how fast and what do we need to do to make that happen. We have the will to do that. It doesn't mean we can rest and wait for that to happen, either. We can't have our heads in the sand and expect that to happen, we have to be active and intentional about the changes necessary to make that happen."
• Cherington on EndyRodriguez, who is now on the injured list with right elbow inflammation and could get checked out by Dr. NealElAttrache: "We really don't know if it's related (to his Tommy John surgery). All signs are that this is not about the ligament. The ligament appears stable, that's based on the information we have now. I do expect that he's going to get seen again, probably get a look."
• Cherington said JoeyBart hasn't yet cleared every hurdle in concussion protocol. He is expected back sooner than later, though.
• DauriMoreta is pretty close to being considered a normal reliever in terms of usage, Cherington said. He's currently rehabbing with Class AAA Indianapolis.
"We pushed the rehab a little bit just because there were still a couple boxes to check and, in fairness to him, we felt like we should check those before we took him off the rehab assignment and got him off the 60. We anticipate that happening sometime soon. He's doing well."
• Getting into games will be the next step for JohanOviedo, who is throwing live BP down in Florida, Cherington said.
• Cherington on KonnorGriffin and how he's looking at shortstop: "We decided to give it a shot at short and see that play out a bit. We didn't really know. We know he's a good athlete and the defense at short has exceeded expectations, to the point where we believe he's a shortstop."
• Cherington said it's exciting for the amateur scouting group to see young guys like Griffin and Wyatt Sanford come into pro ball and flourish so quickly.
