Three observations from the Pirates' 3-2 win over the Cardinals here today at LECOM Park:
• MitchKeller worked his way through three clean innings before leaving a 1-1 slider over the plate and allowing a solo home run to NolanGorman in the fourth. That's not something he wants to see happen in a game that counts, but Keller ultimately left this outing saying that he felt good, as he pitched into the fourth for the first time this spring. He used all six pitches in his arsenal, including a changeup he threw with confidence to finish off two strikeouts, and saw this outing as just another stepping stone toward being where he wants to be ahead of opening day.
• Ryan O'Hearn seems to be in a really comfortable spot at the plate this spring. He's having consistently productive at-bats, including the two that resulted in hits here today. Sent a 2-2 sinker into right field for a second-inning single and took a 2-2 changeup into right for a fourth-inning double. He's laying off the right pitches and doesn't seem to be trying to do anything extra. Just stays within himself and takes what the pitcher is giving him. He has a hit in all but one of his games this spring, he's 6 for 13 overall and has walked three times while striking out once. That'll play when the games start counting.
• There have been far too many instances in past years where the Pirates were sloppy on the basepaths. In this one here, JaredTriolo was caught at third base on a comebacker in the third inning. Now, he probably didn't expect DustinMay to barehand that ball like he did, so I give him at least a little bit of a pass on it, but still an out that would have proved costly in a regular-season setting. The Pirates have to be better in terms of baserunning and avoid running themselves into outs this season.
