Paul Skenes played a key role in the Pirates snapping their seven-game home losing streak to the Padres, defeating them 7-1, tonight at PNC Park. Yet, hearing Skenes post-game, he wasn't exactly thrilled with his 6 1/3 innings after allowing one earned run, two hits, two walks, hit batter and six strikeouts.
“I felt pretty good the whole time. I wouldn’t say great, I wouldn’t say bad," said Skenes. "It was solid all-around. I think the line’s probably a little bit better than it was, but I’m happy with it.”
Skenes started the season with a difficult outing against the Mets allowing five earned runs, but he's since tossed 11 1/3 innings and given up just two earned runs. Tonight's start was his 58th in his career and ended two strikeouts shy of 400 for his career, just missing out on joining 16 others who reached that milestone.
"Yeah that's awesome. Getting him a win, when a guy throws like that, you gotta score runs for that man," Konnor Griffin said of Skenes. "I got a front row seat, getting to see him to do his thing and just the way he prepares for his starts. Those hitters, as someone said, they don’t have a chance because with how dominant he is and it’s cool to be right behind him."
Skenes has been laser focused on winning this season, often deflecting about his own performance or a single game but tonight he did give a positive assessment of the team's performance to date.
"Yeah, we’re in a good spot. A lot of season to go, for sure, but the first couple of weeks have been pretty dang fun," said Skenes. "A long way to go. I’m excited to see what it turns into because I don’t even think we’re playing our best baseball yet – which is scary to think about. It’s going to be a lot of fun."
