Drafted out of Notre Dame, Jack Brannigan was one of the more surprising additions to the 40-man roster this offseason, as the 24-year-old infielder has just 59 games above A-Ball in his professional career.
There's an interesting blend of speed and power, he finished one home run short of having a 20/20 season in 2023 despite playing 87 games, but his defining trait is his defense, especially his arm.
Brannigan can play all over the infield and is more than capable of handling shortstop. The biggest issue so far in his career has been staying healthy. He played 87 games in 2023, then just 77 in 2024, before 59 games in Double-A, before needing season-ending surgery.
At the time of his injury, Brannigan was hitting .225/.329/.358 with five home runs and nine stolen bases.
Considering the speed, sneaky power, and defensive prowess, Brannigan has the makings of a super utility infielder, although the hit tool probably limits him to a bench role. You could also make a strong argument that he's the best defensive shortstop on the 40-man roster currently.
He'll be 25 by the time the season begins, and depending on how the rest of the offseason goes, there's a chance he makes his major league debut at some point this season.
