Ben Cherington will speak on his team-produced weekly show with JoeBlock today on the Pirates Radio Network. I'll include updates here.
• Cherington said the decisions DonKelly has made during games have really stood out to him in the 15 games he's served as manager. He said the decisions have been "really solid, well thought out and prepared for." Also credited him for his daily communication in the clubhouse.
• Despite their 19-34 record through the first 53 games, Cherington said, "We believe we can play winning baseball in 2025, and that's what we're focused on."
• Cherington on Jared Jones, who underwent season-ending elbow surgery this week: "He's going to come back and be an effective major-league pitcher. We'll do everything we can to support him."
• Cherington said there's no fracture or break in Nick Gonzales' hand, but it's still beat up a little bit after he was hit with a pitch during his rehab assignment with Class AAA Indianapolis. He hasn't played regularly for the Indians because of that.
"We just want to let that hand calm down enough to feel good so he can get on a run of playing time and at-bats. Get back locked in and be in a position to get back and help us. We expect that to happen, but we don't have a specific timeline or date for that to happen, he's kind of going to tell us based on when he's ready to play regularly and when we're seeing the at-bats look like Nick Gonzales at-bats. Then he'll be telling us when he's ready to come back."
• Cherington on the catcher position with HenryDavis, JoeyBart and EndyRodriguez, who is still rehabbing with Indianapolis: "I think it's a good problem. We have to have catching long term, we know that's a really important position, and we believe we have those three guys you mentioned, and we believe all of them are capable of being regular catchers at the major-league level. Obviously that can't happen all at once, so the goal is to make sure all three of them are playing regularly enough where they can contribute to the team and also have a chance to keep growing as players. We'll see how that shakes out."
• Cherington said BryanReynolds was scratched from the lineup today and TommyPham is now in left field with AlexanderCanario in right. He said Reynolds felt some "tightness in his trunk" when he reported to the ballpark this morning. Cherington said more information should be available postgame.
• Cherington said there is an exciting group of position players down at Class High-A Greensboro. These aren't household names featured on the top prospect lists, but there are guys who are performing well at young ages. Players are taking steps forward, which is "an exciting development for the Pirates."
