Veteran reliever Chris Devenski has joined the Pirates prior to tonight’s game against the Cardinals at PNC Park. Hunter Barco was optioned to Class AAA Indianapolis to clear room on the active roster and Ryan Harbin was designated for assignment to make room for Devenski on the 40-man roster, which remains full. Multiple moves to add a fresh, experienced arm to the bullpen.
“To get an opportunity with this team and how they’re doing right now, to join along, it’s cool spot to be in,” said Devenski, who added that he’s eager to make an impact whenever he’s called upon. “Go out there and get outs, do my job.”
Devenski, 35, began the season on a rehab assignment with low Class A Bradenton after taking a line drive off the side of the head during a spring training game. He’s made five appearances for Class AAA Indianapolis, allowing two runs (one earned) in eight innings and striking out 14 batters and walking two. In 316 career major-league appearances, Devenski has a 3.91 ERA and 1.13 WHIP.
“Coming back from the injury I had, took some time to get better,” Devenski said. “Just getting ahead in counts, putting guys away, trusting my stuff.”
