Bryan Reynolds can't make a catch on this hit by the Padres' Jackson Merrill in the fifth inning Monday night at PNC Park.
The Pirates beat themselves in more ways than one tonight. Mistakes on the basepaths and in the field were coupled with a lack of control on the part of BubbaChandler in a 5-0 loss to the Padres that put an end to a five-game winning streak here at PNC Park.
The mistakes both cost the Pirates in the run-scoring department and gifted the visiting Padres runs in the middle innings. First, there was this display on the bases following a second-inning single by SpencerHorwitz:
Fernando Tatis Jr. gifted his first outfield assist of the season. Ryan O'Hearn stopped, then realized the trail runner was practically on top of him at third base. So he went home and was out by a mile. Somehow, still scoreless after 2 in Pittsburgh. pic.twitter.com/hhDJyif3aj
The ball goes off of two infield gloves and Ryan O'Hearn looked destined to score from second base, but TonyBeasley puts up the stop sign and contributes to the chaos. That's a situation where the Pirates need to get a run across to gain the early momentum. Instead, they're held scoreless and the miscues continued to pile on. Chandler walked four batters, including two that ended up scoring, and he failed to cover first base on a 3-6 fielder's choice that should have been an inning-ending double play in the fourth. One batter later, NickCastellanos brought in the game's first run with an RBI double.
Bryan Reynolds also contributed to a two-run fifth for the Padres, failing to make a catch on this RBI double by JacksonMerrill:
RUN: Ramon Laureano scores on a ground-rule double for Jackson Merrill. That's a ball Bryan Reynolds has to catch in left. End Bubba Chandler's day, too. Padres, 2-0 -- From José Negron in Pittsburghpic.twitter.com/UV0HLT5OfU
Oneil Cruz has received warranted criticism for some of the mistakes he's made in center field. Reynolds deserves the same treatment in this situation. Not only did it gift the Padres a run, but it ended Chandler's day and led to another run scoring in that inning. Not the type of clean baseball the Pirates need to play in order to have sustained success. Sure, the bats didn't provide any favors in going 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position and stranding nine baserunners after an outburst against the Reds and Orioles. But games aren't going to be won with sloppy play on the bases and in the field.
