Of all catchers, Rodriguez stands out at the plate
Regardless of who is behind the plate for the Pirates on a day-to-day basis during the regular season, odds are they're not going to be slotted near the top or in the heart of the batting order.
The additions made over the offseason have created a more well-rounded offensive group, but that doesn't mean guys like Henry Davis, Joey Bart, Rafael Flores Jr. and Endy Rodriguez are exempt from providing production at the plate.
So far this spring, none of them have truly amazed with the bat, but Rodriguez has stood out, hitting his second home run of the spring in the Pirates' 5-3 win over the Yankees here tonight at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Rodriguez's long ball was the lone hit of the night for a catcher's group, including Davis and Flores, that combined to go 1 for 8 with two walks, two runs scored and four strikeouts. Rodriguez seems destined for Class AAA Indianapolis after yet another arm surgery in 2025, but he's put together the best offensive results of the four top catchers in camp. He's now collected hits and driven in runs in back-to-back games and is batting .250 with five RBIs and eight runs scored over seven games. Davis is hitless in 15 at-bats, Flores is 2 for 15, and Bart is 1 for 18 with nine strikeouts.
Sure, spring results don't matter much, but there has to be offensive production within this group once the games matter. And these scant spring results aren't great, considering the regular season begins in a little over two weeks.
"Looking to the other side is not my job," Rodriguez said. "We try to help each other. We work every morning just to try to give the team the best as separate players. It's something that I'm not looking around (at)."
