Extra Bases: Heaney 'good' after exiting with calf cramp
Andrew Heaney pitched six innings of one run, four hits, five strikeouts and no walks in the Pirates’ 2-1 win against the Phillies today at PNC Park before leaving with a left calf cramp in the seventh, this after his 73rd pitch sailed over Henry Davis:
On Heaney, Don Kelly said, “I saw him trying to stretch it out right before that pitch, kind of caught my eye, and then the next pitch sailed to the backstop and you knew something was going on, obviously, because his command was so good all day.”
As for Heaney’s own assessment, “I'm good. Yeah, just never had that before. Calf just kind of cramped up on me… I just felt a little bit kind of weird all game and just kept going. Threw one in warmups and kind of felt it a little bit and was like, 'Oh, that's weird.' "
Heaney was Houdini on the mound as the Phillies were making hard contact right at players throughout his appearance, only Kyle Schwarber was able to make anything of it with a no-doubter home run over the left center field wall that was clocked at 106 mph and traveled 414 feet to give the Phillies an early 1-0 lead and their only run of the game.
"The balls they hit went right to people,” Heaney said, “Slider was a little better. Just could tell from the first inning, obviously they were going to be swinging early on attack mode and just trying to not feed them too many pitches that they could hit, and just kind of mix it up."
What helped Heaney was throwing 47 of his 73 pitches for strikes and that his four-seam fastball, slider, and changeup were just slightly higher speed than his season average by 0.1 mph.
• The Pirates improved to 7-6 in one-run games under Kelly after going 6-6 with Shelton. Kelly on this: “Man, it's all about them and the way that they're competing and playing. And we've had some games too where we've been out of it and we're able to come back and get the closer in the game too... Just the way that we're continuing to fight, continuing to play and finish, is great.”
• David Bednar's recent performance in the last two games against the Phillies helped to clinch the wins with his late game performance striking out four of the six batters he's faced.
• Henry Davis is hitting .273 with .856 OPS and three home runs over his past 15 games. Today, he singled in the second and won the game in the seventh:
“It feels really good to come through for your teammates," Davis said. "I think I have a tendency to outsmart myself at times at the plate and try and think about, you know, what are they going to do and just scrapping that and if it looks good, swing at it.”
