Shugart expected to throw bullpen session this week
Chase Shugart (left knee inflammation) threw off the mound today for the first time since suffering a setback in his recovery from the injury, which landed him on the 15-day injured list earlier this month in Kansas City.
Todd Tomczyk said this morning that Shugart is expected to throw a full bullpen session later this week.
Additional updates from Tomczyk:
• Johan Oviedo (right lat strain) will make another start for Class AA Altoona tomorrow before eventually continuing his rehab assignment with Class AAA Indianapolis.
• JustinLawrence (right elbow inflammation) is continuing his rehab in Florida, while TimMayza (left shoulder lat muscle strain) is doing the same here in Pittsburgh. Both are expected to throw side sessions later this week.
• JaredJones (elbow) is nine weeks post-op and is not yet close to throwing. He continues to work on strength and range of motion. While there are still hurdles for him to overcome, he's still projected to return sometime next year.
• Ryan Borucki (low back inflammation) threw seven pitches over one inning with Class AAA Indianapolis last night. He's feeling good, according to Tomczyk, and is expected to throw again tonight for Indy.
"Then we’ll continue to have conversations with Ryan, how he responds with the pitching group, notably Oscar (Marin), Jeremy (Bleich) and Donnie (Kelly)," Tomczyk said. "He is meeting the demands of the rehab and showing up.”
• Endy Rodriguez (elbow) is about five weeks post-op. He has not resumed swinging from the left side as originally projected from the onset. Rodriguez is dealing with some residual soreness that the rehab group and Dr. Neal ElAttrache would like to take a little bit slower, concerted effort before he gets cleared.
"We don’t think we’re far off but we’re not there yet," Tomczyk said. "But Endy remains in good spirits and continues to be very diligent with his work down in Florida.”
• EnmanuelValdez (shoulder) had a TeleHealthDoc visit from Dr. Jeffrey Dugas down in Florida at the eight-week mark.
"Pretty encouraged," Tomczyk said. "He’s progressing very nicely with the strength and conditioning stuff – it’s advanced strength and conditioning stuff – so he’s on track to begin his offseason and hopefully he’ll play some winter ball.”
