Mike Clevinger found himself hitting 95 mph on the radar gun pretty consistently here today. That's about two miles per hour faster than what he averaged with his fastball last year, an uptick in velocity that Clevinger claims is a result of one thing in particular.

"I think it has a lot to do with health," said Clevinger, who allowed just one hit, walked two and struck out three in the Pirates' 4-1 victory over the Rays at LECOM Park. "There were a lot of years where I was battling health. If you look back to 2018, 2019, the velo is probably the same that it is now, but I was healthy."

Clevinger has endured plenty of injury issues, including a second Tommy John surgery in 2020, a torn MCL in 2021 and a cervical spine procedure in 2024. He's been limited to 12 major-league appearances over the past two years, but he does have an impressive resumé of success. He was productive in his prime with Cleveland, and with the White Sox with a 3.77 ERA over 24 starts in 2023.

"I feel like it's been years I've been fighting myself," Clevinger said. "It's just good to have a full offseason of training and not have to — that's not the main factor I have to worry about."

Clevinger spent part of his offseason working with Brice Crider at Driveline in an attempt to specifically get his spine in the right spot. He said his spine mobility was lacking in the past and he wanted to find a way to move more athletically again. Now, he's feeling like he's in a good spot, as he competes for an opportunity on the Pirates' opening day roster.

"This is a great clubhouse with a great team," Clevinger said. "Looking at this team, we could do something special. So whatever it is to help this team win, whether its long relief, starting, back and forth, trying to get to October is the main goal."

Three observations from the Pirates' 4-1 win over the Rays here today at LECOM Park:

• There's no doubt that Henry Davis has a lot to prove offensively this season. But he deserves credit for the work he's done to provide defensive value behind the plate. I've talked a lot about the conversations I've had with pitchers who praise Davis for his ability to work with a staff, and the arm talent is there, too. He showed that in throwing out Jacob Melton with a perfect throw to end the first inning. Perfect tag by Alika Williams, as well. That's no slouch he threw out, either. Melton is a guy with 90th percentile sprint speed. He stole 46 bags in the minors in 2023 and 30 bags a year later.

• Imagine the creative things the Pirates could do on the basepaths with a guy like Jake Mangum, who just causes so much havoc out there. Like today when he took off for second base before the pitcher even went home. He puts the guy in an uncomfortable situation where he has to get a throw off quick and it all goes awry. Allowed Williams to score from third. More of that is needed. Any way to manufacture runs.

• I don't see Williams taking reps away from guys who need them, so I don't have an issue with him playing a good bit this spring. It's not like him playing takes away from a guy like Konnor Griffin's development. Griffin will get the playing time he needs. As for Williams, he's a fine Class AAA Indianapolis depth piece with a good infield glove and arm. Sure he's not a bat-first guy, but it's spring training, so why not allow him to get some reps during games that don't count for anything. Everyone's here to work on things and get better in games, including the guys expected to start the year in the minors.

• HOME RUN: Yordany De Los Santos goes to right. Barely went out. Pirates 3, Rays 1

• RUN: Two walks and a single off Mlodzinski before Davidson drives in a run with a single. Lack of execution here for Mlodzinski. Pirates 1, Rays 1

• RUN: Mangum causing havoc again. Swipes second and forces an errant throw by Englert. Williams scores. Pirates 1, Rays 0

• Clevinger with up to three strikeouts through three scoreless. Up to 49 pitches. Seven whiffs with the changeup. Fastball velo around 95.4, which is two miles per hour more than what he averaged last year. Even hit 97 today, which he’s only done a few times in his entire career.

• Clevinger gets two whiffs with the changeup to strike out Davidson. Good pitch to go to after going strictly fastball in that at-bat.

• Clevinger hasn't been the most efficient in terms of hitting the strike zone, but he's getting guys to swing at inside pitches and getting outs. Whatever works, I guess.

• Mangum is doubled off first, but nothing he can do there. Liner to second off the bat of Lowe. Mangum couldn't get back in time.

• Mangum's hustle never ceases to amaze me. Guy just plays the game the right way and doesn't take a single play off. Just legged out an infield single. His speed forced a bad throw. That's something you love to see at the top or bottom of a lineup.

• Clevinger walks a batter and gets two quick outs before Davis guns down Melton trying to swipe second. Perfect throw, perfect tag by Williams.
