The Pirates drafted a few back-up plans in 2025, just in case second-round pick Angel Cervantes didn't sign. When he did announce he would attend UCLA, they shifted focus to some of their later round prep picks they had taken, McLane Moody being one of them.
A 15th-round pick, Moody was set to attend the University of Arkansas but instead signed an over slot deal with the Pirates.
He didn't make his pro debut, but did pitch a couple of innings during the Dominican Instructional League.
It's all projection now at this point, as Moody is listed at 6'7", but with plenty of room to grow into that frame. His fastball sits in the 90-92 range, but most believe that he will add more to it once his body fills out.
There are some outlier characteristics to the fastball, which gives it a chance to be a plus pitch should he add that velocity.
Moody will likely get his start in the FCL in 2026. He's a bit of a project, but there is plenty of upside there.
