Cherington: Ligament in Rodriguez's elbow 'appears stable'
Based on information the Pirates currently have regarding the right elbow inflammation that caused EndyRodriguez to be placed on the 10-day injured list yesterday, BenCherington said today that the ligament "appears stable." However, Rodriguez could still meet with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the surgeon who performed his UCL surgery in December 2023.
"We may have him see him just to really make sure we have every piece of information on what's going on," Cherington said on his weekly radio show today. "He felt something in the elbow and, obviously, that's concerning when that happens. Based on our initial testing and diagnosis, we don't think it's the ligament that's causing that. There's something else going on in there, but we want clarity on that for his sake and our sake. It's just frustrating. He is the most frustrated, you could see that on his face when he came out of the game and you could see that in the clubhouse when I went down there. We're going to hope for generally good news and we're going to hope he comes back from this, and he will, it's just a matter of how much time it's going to take. It's a tough blow."
Rodriguez left Friday's game with what was initially described as right elbow discomfort. He spoke with Don Kelly and a trainer near home plate after throwing down to second base following Bailey Falter's warmup pitches in the second inning and was replaced by HenryDavis.
Rodriguez, who's hitting .173/.246/.250 this season, missed a majority of last year before returning toward the end of the year and playing in 10 games between Class AA Altoona and Class AAA Indianapolis as part of a rehab assignment. He also missed more than a month this season due to a right hand laceration sustained in mid-April.
