Paul Skenes pitches in the second inning Wednesday in Milwaukee.
Paul Skenes allowed four runs in the second inning and didn't pitch past the fourth for only the third time in his career, as the Pirates couldn't solve JacobMisiorowski in a 4-2 loss to the Brewers this afternoon at American Family Field.
Skenes gave up four hits and walked one while throwing 37 pitches in the second. Joey Ortiz, Eric Haase, Sal Frelick and Christian Yelich all drove in runs as Skenes' streak of nine starts allowing two runs or fewer was snapped. He struck out four, walked two and was pulled after 78 pitches, his lowest count of the season, though Don Kelly would later acknowledge that had been planned because of a heavy inning load of late.
"Obviously, this one was a little lower volume," Skenes said. "We probably have to mix those in occasionally throughout the year. But you look at the stretch that we just went on, where a lot of it was on five days, going seven, eight innings pretty consistently. I've been happy with it. My body is in a good spot. I think that kinda tells me what we did in the offseason and throughout spring training, up to this point in the season, has been the right thing. ... At the end of the day, the focus is going to be staying on the field."
Making his third big-league start, Misiorowski allowed two hits over five scoreless innings. He walked two and struck out eight. Tommy Pham, who drove in the Pirates' first run with a seventh-inning single, had two of their four hits. SpencerHorwitz hit an RBI double in the eighth.
