Tonight was undoubtedly Marco Gonzales' least effective outing in a Pirates uniform. Gonzales, who entered tonight with a 2.70 ERA through five starts this season, gave up four runs on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout in 2 1/3 innings. He threw 43 of 67 pitches for strikes and allowed second-inning home runs to Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte.
“I thought my command was off. I just didn’t like the way the ball was coming out," Gonzales said. "I didn’t really give myself a chance. Hard to assess that. Three walks and just unnecessary pitches. Not getting ahead of anybody. Really just a poor effort on my part, not giving the team a chance to win and not getting deep into the game.”
The changeup is an important part of Gonzales' arsenal, and the Diamondbacks continuously put it the ball in play and collected two first-inning hits against it. Carroll's homer came on a changeup over the heart of the plate.
"They got to the changeup. Didn't use the curveball much early. Overall, he was just in the middle of the plate and they took advantage," Derek Shelton said. "I think Marte hit a cutter out. They just continued to grind out at-bats. It's why they've given left-handers trouble all year long."
Gonzales is a veteran who's battled a ton of ups and downs throughout his career. So, I asked him what the key would be to bouncing back from an outing like this.
“Looking forward to the next one," he replied. "The season’s really long and we have a lot of baseball to play. I’m pretty good at flushing it, putting my head down and going to work. That’s all I know.”
