Nicolas traded for Callihan, Reds' No. 19 prospect
The Pirates have traded Kyle Nicolas to the Reds for infielder/outfielder TylerCallihan.
Callihan, 25, rated by both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline as Cincinnati’s No. 19 prospect, began 2025 with Class AAA Louisville, where he batted .303 with four home runs, 12 RBIs and a .938 OPS across 24 games. He made his major-league debut April 30 and went 1 for 6 with an RBI before suffering a season-ending left forearm fracture after colliding with an outfield wall May 5 in Atlanta.
Nicolas made 86 appearances over the last three seasons for the Pirates, compiling a 4.68 ERA and 1.48 WHIP. He’s currently playing for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic.
The Pirates have one less arm in the hunt for a spot in a bullpen that has a few locks, including Dennis Santana, Gregory Soto, Isaac Mattson and Justin Lawrence.
