Three observations from the Pirates' 7-5 win over the Tigers here tonight at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium:
• MikeClevinger surely didn't want to walk four guys, including two he fell behind 3-0 to in the second inning. Still, he managed to limit the Tigers to just one hit and struck out a season-high five over 4 1/3 innings. He was charged with two earned runs after walking two in the fifth, but it was a relatively solid bounce back after an outing in which Clevinger allowed four runs on five hits in three innings against the Red Sox, despite believing his stuff was actually better the last time out. There's plenty of risk with Clevinger, considering his long injury history. But I think he's proving capable of serving a purpose on the big-league team, whether it's as a fifth starter or bulk reliever out of the bullpen.
• Some quality at-bats from EndyRodriguez tonight. Fouled off some tough pitches before singling in the third inning. Then, he put himself in a good hitter's count before finding the same result later on. It didn't look like he was trying to do too much. Not a bad spring for him at the dish. Better when you compare it to that of the other catchers in camp. JoeyBart was 1 for 3 with an RBI tonight and RafaelFlores was 0 for 2 with a walk.
• Pirates hitters didn't let Tigers pitchers off the hook in this one, drawing eight walks, including four in the second inning. JakeMangum led the way in that regard with two free passes, one of which drove in the game's first run. Mangum and AlikaWilliams both drew four-pitch walks in the second.
