Extra Bases: Davis credits Frazier, coaches for advice
Henry Davis has finally found his groove, and he credits Adam Frazier and his hitting coaches.
Over the past 15 days, Davis is slashing .412/.474/.647 with a 1.121 OPS to go with seven hits, a home run, a double, four RBIs, two walks and three strikeouts. He has gone 4 for 8 with three runs scored, one double, one home run and three RBIs that last two games. That includes a 2-for-5 in the Pirates' 10-1 win over the Diamondbacks today at Chase Field.
Davis said that Frazier recently showed him a drill that "talked through trying to put the ball close to you and try to drive it to the middle of the field." He said it has helped him stay short and find good pitches to hit.
"The hitting coaches have been out there with me every day for three weeks straight in early work, grinding away and taking advantage of not really playing a lot," Davis told me. "You can get some really good work days in so building off that and Frazier kinda helped put a little icing on the cake with it."
Davis also told me that he's closed his stance slightly since May began, something that he said just came "gradually" but he's having good results.
"I felt like there’s little things that I don’t notice too much," Davis said. "But, I feel like I’m in my best spot when I’m in a good neutral position to handle everything."
• Paul Skenes was asked today if Pittsburgh is where he wants to be long term:
"I don't know. Just here and now."
• En route to a series win, the Pirates scored 19 runs in the past two days, the most runs they've scored in a series. They did so on 23 hits and nine extra-base hits, hitting .355 with runners in scoring position. They drew eight walks.
"I think when you look at it, it hasn't been the big home run. It's been we got guys on base," Don Kelly said, before singling out Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Ke'Bryan Hayes. "Isiah last night with the ball down the line. We went gap-to-gap today. Henry came up in a situation, drove the ball to left-center. Ke'Bryan with one to right-center. It was just mixing in those hits. It doesn't have to be a big home run that gets it done. It can be a basehit to left-center or right-center, stay within yourself. We had a lot of that today. Guys just passing the baton and keeping the line moving."
