Isiah Kiner-Falefa showcased what he can do defensively during the Pirates' six-game homestand with a brilliant tag at third base, a catch-and-throw double play and a sliding backhanded stop in the hole.
Despite that, Kiner-Falefa is worth -4 Outs Above Average, which ranks 29th among qualified shortstops. However, his 75% success rate ranks third-highest in the major leagues.
"I do feel like what I've been doing right now is usually how I feel I can play all the time," Kiner-Falefa said. "I think the big thing is taking care of the body and staying consistent. But I feel like I can play better than what I'm showing right now."
Kiner-Falefa has committed six errors and has a .978 fielding percentage, the 15th-best among qualified shortstops in Major League Baseball.
"Isiah gets to some balls that other guys don't get to, and he's gotten some errors on those, that is unfortunate," Don Kelly said. "... But he's a baseball player. He's out there playing."
