A day after allowing three runs and being shut out for the 10th time this season, the Pirates flipped the script tonight. Mike Burrows tossed 5 1/3 innings of scoreless ball and benefitted from sufficient offensive support in a 3-0 victory over the Astros at PNC Park.
Making his third career major-league start, Burrows surrendered five hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out six while throwing 70 pitches. ChaseShugart,BraxtonAshcraft and DavidBednar combined to preserve the shutout.
“He was awesome," DonKelly said of Burrows. "We talked about being able to slow things down and he goes 3-0 on (Jeremy) Pena to start the game. He slowed it down immediately and ended up striking him out in that first inning. Just did a great job of mixing it up. His velo was up a little bit, mixed in the changeup, switched sides of the plate. Endy (Rodriguez) did a fantastic job calling it. He had a big strikeout there on (Jacob) Melton, tripled up on the changeup. Just did a great job.”
The Pirates struck for two runs in the second inning after TommyPham reached on an infield single and advanced to third on a double by EndyRodriguez. The two scored on a 6-3 groundout from Isiah Kiner-Falefa and a sacrifice fly by AndrewMcCutchen, respectively. Another run was scored without a run-scoring hit in the third. SpencerHorwitz and Ke'Bryan Hayes hit back-to-back singles and Horwitz, who reached third on Hayes' hit, scored on a 4-6-3 double play.
