The Pirates have scored seven or more runs five times this season. Tonight, they scored seven in an inning, erasing a four-run deficit that'd originally been a six-run deficit to emerge on top, 9-6, over the Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
"Wow!," Don Kelly exclaimed in his office. "That's all I can say!"
Outside of Henry Davis' two-run home run in the sixth, the offense had been characteristically lifeless, that shot snapping a 15-inning scoreless streak, including everything to that point against Corbin Burnes.
Davis got it going in the eighth, too, with a leadoff double to right-center off Kevin Ginkel, after which:
• Alexander Canario singled • Adam Frazier struck out • Tommy Pham's infield single scored Davis • Ke'Bryan Hayes walked to load the bases • Isiah Kiner-Falefa doubled to left for three • Oneil Cruz reached on a throwing error • Bryan Reynolds went 4 for 4 in style:
Reynolds shortened his swing on Beeks' inside fastball and still somehow got all of it.
"Burnes had pretty good stuff tonight, so you're not always going to be able to get guys on but eventually we were able to get into the bullpen and we were able to flip things around," Hayes told me. "I feel like I've always said whenever we're at our best, we're taking our walks, getting singles and not really trying to do anything too big. Then, out of nowhere, B-Rey home run, Henry home run, Izzy double. Really, with any offense I think the more you can get guys on consistently, especially getting the first guy on in the inning, that helps a lot."
The Pirates had won six games over the past 20 years when trailing by four or more runs in the eighth inning or later.
"You get one of those hits and I think it starts to feed off of each other," Kelly said. "Everyone wants to be the guy to come through, like we’ve talked about and it’s just staying within yourself, squaring it up and letting it happen."
"Bryan had a phenomenal game. Same with Izzy," Davis said. "That's just a testament to continue grinding. We keep talking, continue to hit the ball, eventually it's going to fall."
• Joey Bart exited the game in the fifth inning with an apparent head injury, struck by Lourdes Gurriel's backswing in the fourth, then again by a caromed foul ball in Gurriel's next at-bat.
While catching warmup pitches from Joey Wentz in the fifth, he stood and motioned to the athletic trainers to remove him:
Bart has a history of concussions. He was scratched from a game last season with concussion-like symptoms after being hit in the head during batting practice. He was placed on the seven-day concussion IL in 2022 while playing for the Giants.
