Pirates 5, Brewers 4: Bats, bullpen deliver second straight day
GETTY
Nick Gonzales hits an RBI double in the first inning Monday night in Milwaukee.
The Pirates' offense that entered the week as Major League Baseball's worst produced enough to support a bullish effort by the bullpen to beat the Brewers, 5-4, tonight here at American Family Field.
Despite striking out 16 times, the offense finished with 14 hits, marking the first time they've generated back-to-back double-digit hit games since May 27-28. NickGonzales led the way with his first career five-hit performance and two RBIs, while TommyPham hit his first home run and singled, BryanReynolds also had two hits and Isiah Kiner-Falefa drove in the winning run with a sixth-inning triple.
Braxton Ashcraftopened the game with three scoreless innings, allowing one hit, striking out two and throwing 28 of 35 pitches for strikes. HunterStratton gave up three runs on four hits and a walk in one inning, but ChaseShugart, IsaacMattson and DavidBednar combined to shut the door by allowing one run over the final five innings.
"That was the gutsiest win of the year, in my opinion, that was unbelievable," DonKelly said. "Ashcraft's start, the bullpen coming in behind each other, we get up 3-0, they score two, we score two, they tie it. Just back and forth on the road against a good Brewers team. Everybody contributed and stepped up. It was a great team win."
• Won two in a row • Lost 6 of past 9 • 20-22 under Kelly
