The Pirates struck out 10 times tonight, mustered four hits and couldn't capitalize with the bases loaded late as they lost to the Cubs, 3-2, at Wrigley Field.
The Pirates mounted a rally in the seventh, securing three hits and two earned runs off Jameson Taillon before forcing him from the game. However, Oneil Cruz ended it when he swung over a 3-2 slider from Brad Keller. Cruz leads the Pirates with 31 strikeouts in the seventh inning or later and is hitting .159 with four home runs and 11 RBIs in 69 at-bats.
"Taillon threw strikes, breaking ball was really effective, spinning it for strikes and also beneath the zone. He kept us off balance," DonKelly said. "But again, found a way to get something going there and had a chance to win the ballgame. Some really good at-bats that bunched together. Just couldn't come up with a big hit."
Andrew Heaney earned his sixth quality start in 14 games but gave up two home runs that made the difference. Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a two-run shot on a high fastball in the fourth inning and Seiya Suzuki followed up with another two innings later. Heaney's given up 11 home runs this season.
• Won six of past 10 games • 9-23 on the road this year • 16-16 since Kelly became manager
