The Pirates recorded one hit after a two-run first inning, giving the pitching staff little room for error as David Bednar allowed the game-winning hit in the 10th inning of the Pirates' 3-2 loss to the Cubs today at Wrigley Field.
"They did a good job defending the field today," said Spencer Horwitz, who recorded two of the Pirates' four hits. "But, we have to give ourselves more opportunities. Whether it be a walk, a bunt, rallying a couple hits together. We just have to create more opportunities."
Oneil Cruz, Nick Gonzales and Horwitz each tallied hits in the first inning. Colin Rea retired 16 of the next 17 batters and the Cubs' bullpen walked two in the final four innings.
Mitch Keller delivered his 11th quality start by throwing six innings, scattering three hits, walking two and striking out three. However, he gave up his eighth lead of the season when the Cubs scored two runs on two hits and one walk in the first.
