Mike Burrows pitches in the first inning tonight at PNC Park.
A Tommy Pham triple in the second inning was followed by nine innings with zero hits, as the Pirates suffered a 1-0 loss in 11 innings to the Diamondbacks tonight at PNC Park.
Despite earning the no-decision, Mike Burrows put together arguably his best major league start in tossing a career-high six scoreless innings. He allowed three hits, one walk and struck out five. Isaac Mattson, Dennis Santana andDavid Bednar combined to throw three scoreless innings in relief, while BraxtonAshcraft limited the Diamondbacks to an unearned run in two innings.
Despite finishing with just one hit, the Pirates had their share of opportunities to score, including in extra innings where they got runners to third on two separate occasions. LioverPeguero had a slim chance in the 11th, but didn't tag to score on a shallow flyout off the bat of BryanReynolds.
"In games like this, I think there can be a lot of second guessing on a lot of different stuff," Don Kelly said. "And as a staff, we do that too. We're going to beat it up and talk about and see if there's a better way to go about that and make the adjustment and continue to work."
