Cherington: Valdez 'knocking on the door' of promotion
Ben Cherington spoke on his team-produced radio show with Joe Block this afternoon, following yesterday's press conference with local media.
He touched on a lot of similar subjects, but here are a few highlights:
• On the automated ball-strike system: "One thing
we learned, at the minor-league level, catchers seem to be getting challenges right. They are pretty objective. It's not their pitch, not their at-bat. But
pitchers and hitters, not as good of a track record. Potentially significant value, if
you keep getting it right over the course of the game, it can add up."
• Impressions on the players from the 2024 draft class: "There's good encouraging signs with Konnor (Griffin), Wyatt Sanford, Will Taylor, and
Connor Wietgrefe."
• About Esmerlyn Valdez playing well in Greensboro: "He's a good-hitting development story this year. He's always been a good hitter, made a swing adjustment last offseason to take advantage of that power, better swing, more productive, incredible season and is knocking on the door for a promotion. Guys like that, without the highest profile, you need guys like that. We're excited for him."
• Colin Holderman's rehab: "Pitched for the Marauders, his stuff was in the zone. He's going to get some outings at Triple-A (Indianapolis)." In his appearance on Friday, Holderman threw one inning, struck out three and allowed a solo home run.
