Oviedo (right lat strain) expected to throw live BP later this week
Johan Oviedo continues to make progress in his recovery from both a right lat strain and the Tommy John surgery he underwent in December 2023.
Todd Tomczyk said this afternoon that Oviedo threw a bullpen session in Bradenton yesterday and came out of it feeling "really good." The next step is for him to throw a live BP session later this week.
"That's really exciting for him, and he's feeling really good from the lat and the Tommy John surgery," Tomczyk said. "So a nice, monumental moment for Johan."
Tomczyk added that Oviedo is currently topping out around 93, 94 mph, and that his velocity and ramp up continues to be monitored. He said the staff believes the ramp up of intensity during spring training was what served as an attributing factor to the lat injury.
"The group down there, including Johan, is very cognizant of that slow ramp up," Tomczyk said. "He's not up to full game speed velocity. We've talked about him before. He's just a different character when he rehabs. He sees red out there, and it's hard to really restrict his velocity, but himself and the rehab team is very cognizant of the velocity, from every throw he made on flat ground to every throw he's making off the mound."
More from Tomczyk:
• DauriMoreta (elbow) continues to rehab with Class AAA Indianapolis. Tomczyk said Moreta has continued to "meet the standards and the bar of that rehab" and that he has had no issues. Moreta threw a scoreless inning Tuesday in Memphis and has allowed three earned runs in 11 2/3 innings with Indy.
Tomczyk didn't have a definitive answer as to when Moreta could potentially join the big-league club, but he said that, from a medical perspective, "we would have no issues with recommending him being 'game-readiness' very soon."
• JustinLawrence (right elbow inflammation) will be assessed for throwing in a couple weeks, per Tomczyk.
• TimMayza (left shoulder lat muscle strain) underwent serial imaging late last week and it was reviewed by team doctors and a second opinion doctor, Chicago-based AnthonyRomeo. Mayza received clearance to begin a plyometric program, a phase that precedes the integration of an actual throwing program. The expectation is that Mayza will be in that phase for about two weeks, Tomczyk said.
• ColinHolderman (thumb) has taken a "pause of healing" and is not throwing yet. He will be reassessed on Friday.
• JoeyBart (concussion) remains in protocol, but he is improving and is back to full baseball activities. He's taking part in high intensity training exercises and is being monitored daily and hourly.
"We're just not there yet, but that's a day-to-day situation," Tomczyk said, adding that it's still yet to be determined whether Bart will require a rehab assignment. "From a medical perspective, we'll get the clearance when that time is right, then we'll share that with (DonKelly) and his staff and figure out if rehab games are necessary."
• EnmanuelValdez (shoulder) is two weeks removed from surgery and continues to rehab in Florida.
