Tomczyk: Lawrence, Mayza to throw bullpens next week
Relief pitchers Justin Lawrence (right elbow) and Tim Mayza (left shoulder) will begin throwing bullpens and sides following the All-Star break, senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomcyzk said today.
The two have been on similar rehab timelines and have thrown out to 120 feet on flat ground.
"That'll be a very, very nice, monumental accomplishment for both of them since how long they've been down," Tomcyzk said.
Here are a few other injury updates from Tomczyk:
• Chase Shugart (left knee inflammation) was added to the 15-day IL yesterday after his appearance Monday. Tomczyk said Shugart returned to Pittsburgh and received an injection to "calm the inflammation." Shugart's expected to resume throwing this weekend and Tomczyk said he believes Shugart could rebound in a "short nature.
• Ryan Borucki (back) started a rehab assignment with low Class A Bradenton and "feels good." He'll throw again this week, but Tomczyk was unsure if that outing would take place in Bradenton, Fla.
• There were no major updates with Johan Oviedo (right lat strain). He has continued his rehab assignment in Bradenton and is scheduled to pitch again this week.
• Jared Jones (elbow) is seven weeks post-surgery and continues to work on range of motion and strength: "He's meeting the demands of the current rehab protocol," Tomczyk said.
• Emmanuel Valdez (left shoulder) is nearing the eight-week mark in his recovery. He has a follow-up with Dr. Jeffery Dugas next week and could be cleared to begin advanced strength and conditioning work.
• Endy Rodriguez (elbow) is continuing to work on strength and range of motion in his rehab.
