Endy Rodriguez (elbow inflammation) is set to see Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the surgeon who performed his UCL surgery in December 2023, later this week in Los Angeles, Todd Tomczyk said this afternoon.
Tomczyk said the Pirates are "still learning" about Rodriguez's injury five days after he was removed from the team's matchup against the Phillies on June 6. Rodriguez threw down to second base after Bailey Falter's warm-up pitches in the second inning before being evaluated by trainers. He was placed on the 10-day IL the next day.
Other injury updates from Tomczyk:
• Johan Oviedo (Tommy John/right lat strain) has thrown one live batting practice and was clocked at 94 mph, Tomczyk said. Oviedo's scheduled to throw another in the "coming days" at Pirate City in Bradenton, Fla. Tomczyk said Oviedo has to get through "a number of lives, then we’ll go sims (simulated games)," before having a conversation about a rehab assignment.
• As I reported yesterday, Colin Holderman (right thumb)has resumed throwing. Tomczyk said Holderman will work out to to 90, 120 feet in the coming days.
• Tim Mayza (shoulder) and Justin Lawrence (elbow) will both begin throwing this weekend. Tomczyk said they are on similar schedules despite having different injuries. They "have a ways to go," to ramp back up, Tomczyk said.
• Jared Jones (elbow) is three weeks post internal brace surgery and is working on range of motion. Tomczyk said Jones has hit the "early benchmarks" of his rehab.
• Dauri Moreta (Tommy John) has had zero setbacks during his rehab assignment with Class AAA Indianapolis. He's thrown 13 2/3 innings between Class High-A Greensboro and Indianapolis, producing a 3.29 ERA and 1.46 WHIP.
• Enmanuel Valdez is three weeks post-op and his rehab is "going in a good direction," according to Tomczyk.
• Anthony Solometo (shoulder), the Pirates' No. 14 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, has resumed throwing after being placed on the 60-day IL on May 7. Tomczyk said he's back out to 120 feet and is transitioning into the live batting practice and simulation game phase of his rehab.
