Source: Jones meeting Tuesday with elbow specialist
Jared Jones has a Tuesday appointment with Dr. Keith Meister, noted elbow specialist, for an exam on his UCL sprain that could lead to surgery, per a team source, though the source also stressed that no such decision's been made.
In such settings, the doctor commonly makes the recommendation for surgery and executes it immediately, with the player consenting in advance.
Jones has been out since March 19 when the Pirates announced he was experiencing lingering pain in his right elbow following his last spring training start on March 13. He was diagnosed with a UCL sprain a week later but the ligament, at the time, was stable so surgery wasn't recommended.
The 23-year-old right-hander underwent a six-week no-throw program and then began a plyo-ball program April 9. Two weeks ago, the Pirates reported Jones was in the second week of his throwing program and was throwing on flat ground up to 75 feet. He accompanied the team on its trip to New York and Philadelphia and the team confirmed Wednesday that Jones was "continuing his rehab."
