Bailey Falter won't be the first or last pitcher victimized by the Mariners' magnificent slugger, Cal Raleigh, and he's not even the only one to have a couple of bruises to show for it.
Raleigh, Major League Baseball's home run leader and arguably the sport's story of the summer, boomed Nos. 34 and 35 off Falter fastballs this afternoon in the Pirates' streak-snapping 6-0 loss to the Mariners here at T-Mobile Park. The other two to serve up two Raleigh home runs on the same day: Jack Leiter of the Rangers and Mitchell Parker of the Nationals.
"Yeah, he's hot. He's hot this year. What's he got now, 35?" Falter would ask related to Raleigh. "Just fell behind on him. Missed execution. Ball needs to be up. I got him the one time, and it was hard for me to get the ball up again after that. He took advantage of it."
The loss ended two remarkable runs for the Pirates, in that they'd won six in a row and their pitchers had strung together 31 scoreless innings, the latter ending on Raleigh's first home run, a two-run shot, in the first inning, and they hadn't bee shut out since June 2. All of it went poof.
